On-Board Wireless Data Transmission (OWDT)

Contract: European Space Agency and Contraves Space AG (Switzerland) - 2005

An on-board wireless data communication system based on Bluetooth technology was developed under contract for the European Space Agency. The objective of the project was to develop a low to medium speed wireless data communications network based on Bluetooth technology to cope with satellite TM-TC on board data traffic. A second objective was to validate the RF Physical and Link layers of the Bluetooth technology for a possible future usage in spacecraft on-board data communications.

One of the main items developed was a smart sensors uRTU box that was wirelessly connected to the On-Board-Computer. The uRTU was based on COTS components with a possible flight version in the future.
